Student Delegation of School of Global Governance participates in the 4th United Nations Agencies Advocacy and Consultation Event in Shanghai

Time: November 28, 2023

On 25th November, the School of Global Governance of RUC was invited to participate in the 4th United Nations Agency Consultation jointly hosted by the China Scholarship Council and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. More than 20 international organizations, including UNESCO, UNHCR, UNDP, UNICEF, etc., participated in the presentation and consultation. Forty-three students from the School of Global Governance and one teacher attended the event.

The activity was divided into on-site counselling activities of UN agencies and special lectures of UN agencies. In the on-site consultation activity, representatives of each international organization provided the participating youths with opportunities for interaction, consultation and Q&A at the booth of their respective organizations; in the special lecture on consultation, representatives greeted the youths in the audience and warmly introduced the basic information of their organizations and the recruitment requirementsto them.

Below are the reflections of the attending students.

Huang Jiaxi, Master's Student of School of History, Class of 2021

As a student of RUC, I am honored to participate in the Fourth United Nations Agency Presentation and Consultation. I was able to get detailed information about specific UN agencies, understood the working experience of UN staff and the selection and funding regulations of the Commission. We also encouraged each other with my peers who share similar aspirations in the process. The consultation was not only an important window to understand the United Nations agencies, but also a key opportunity to influence my career choice.

Wang Hanyu, Master's student of School of Foreign Languages, Class of 2023

The discussions with the representatives of the organizations and my peers during the presentation gave me a lot of inspiration. In response to some of the students' questions, the representatives gave me advice on how to improve my CV and how to build up my personal skills, which guided me in my next personal development plan. My peers came from different majors and had different career development plans, and hearing about their experiences in interviewing with different international organizations also helped me with my internships application.

Additionally, I have gained a better understanding of the setup of UN organizations as well as the hiring criteria, which has illuminated the way forward for my future career development planning, and I will continue to improve my personal experience and skills in order to achieve my goals as soon as possible.

Shan Wenyan, Undergraduate Student, Class of 2021

It was my first time to meet face-to-face with officials from various UN agencies on career planning and development. I was amazed by their confidence, generosity and affinity, but what was even more impressive was their recognition of their profession, belief in their mission and concern for the future of mankind. There are still many uncertain risks, challenges yet beauties waiting for me to take the initiative to explore and solve. I sincerely hope that I can contribute to the sustainable future of mankind.

Feng Yichen, Master's student, Class of 2022

This event was very informative as there were many international organizations presenting, including the ones that I am most interested in and that are most relevant to my major: the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). The opportunities of working in international organizations are very attractive to me. Not only did I practice my oral communication skills, but I also gained an in-depth understanding of the internal frameworks of these organizations and the requirements I need to meet. I hope that I can have the opportunity to enter these organizations for internship and get the final job qualification.
